Santa Clara/Alum Rock BRT

IBI Group was responsible for leading station architecture, structural, urban, and technology design for this 7.2 mile, 21 station bus rapid transit (BRT) system providing limited-stop connection to downtown San Jose.

Client
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
Location
Santa Clara Valley, CA
20 Miles Length
28 Stations Size
2013 Completed

This was the first of three planned BRT corridors for the Valley Transportation Authority, extending from its western terminus at San Jose Arena (Arena Station) to the Alum Rock Transit Center, and continuing along Capitol Expressway to the Eastridge Transit Center (Eastridge Station).

The stations were designed to include a number of enhanced physical features, including weather protection sheltering, ergonomic seating, intuitive signage, lighting, local art, and a distinctive brand identity including unique station icons.

The stations also implement several technologies to improve ease of use for riders and operators, including new security systems, digital ticket machines and fare validation machines. The network is also powered by a real-time communications system featuring “next bus” technology, which provides up-to-the-minute arrival information via electronic signage and wireless capabilities.

As part of the project, IBI Group was also tasked with developing the VTA BRT design guidelines and criteria, as well as design development principles for all stations.
